Grotesque Monsters & Glorious Worlds

THE ICE AGE saw the destruction of many monsters but it seemed as if some came back during a recent cold spell in southwest BC. A string of Icicles clung to the greenery with a firm dinosaur-like grip smothering the winter berries.

Reptilian creatures with grotesque heads devoured the fruit.

Their jagged claws with freezing sharp tips sent a chilling message.

Beware you don't get stabbed by an icy spear on your way out the gate, it said.

Ducking to get to the car in the driveway ...

I observed magical reflections within the icy formations.

Ice cages entrapped the berries and ensnared their leaves.

I could imagine ice palaces within those slithery smooth walls and strange worlds where everything glistened and warmth was feared.

The glorious architecture all the more worthy of being revered because it is normally short-lived in my rainy corner of the world.

  3. These ephemeral sculpture of nature are so impressive, some scary but mostly beautiful. I can imagine your being engrossed in photography forgetting the chill, penelope. There are dinosaurs, a beetle locked in ice, fingers of Ice Witch, an injector (the last) …. in my imagination. Icy spears must really hurt. Thanks for sharing this magical world of icicles.

  7. I've always loved the vivid imagination you show in your photos, but these are classic. I'm hoping you find a market for them, or something (or something is never useful advice, is it?)
Hugs from my house to yours.

  8. wow I didn't realise that it was so cold over there as we have summer. They are pieces of art though these ice formations.

  9. Those are surreal images and utterly beautiful. So good that your great eye and camera captured these temporary works of nature's art for posterity!

Be careful out there (if those ones hanging over the door haven't all melted and dripped away).

  13. I moved backward through your blog for a bit of a catch-up and was mesmerized by these photos, Maria! You ran the gamut from scary to magnificent in your imaginings and took your readers along for quite a roller-coaster ride. "Jagged claws" and "reptilian creatures" and "glorious architecture" appeared to me as I moved through the post. It is pouring today and I'm thinking it was a good thing that you captured the moment before it disappeared.
