The Rise & Fall Of Heaven & Hell

SOME SAY HEAVEN and hell are both right here on earth and you can certainly see why ... from the wars mankind perpetuates and has forced on innocents throughout the ages to the awe-inspiring beauty of the planet. And from the nurturing aspects of Mother Nature to her indifference when she casually shifts and an earthquake or tsunami causes enormous suffering.

When contemplating these opposing worlds represented by two words beginning with the letter "H", it is clear to see that existence is as rife with ups and downs as a seesaw in some bizarre playground. Most of us avoid the extremes and get stuck in the middle trying to stay on the upside.

While some fear fire and brimstone in the afterlife others envision angels and harps. But it is in the land of the living that good and evil really play themselves out. And while some folk have a knack for bringing hell down into heavenly places others do well at lifting heaven back up out of hell.

  1. I loved this post. The photographs and narrative are great. It amazes me sometimes that some people who are so concerned with an afterlife of heaven and hell seem to feel little personal responsibility for atrocities they perpetuate on earth. There are certainly many recent examples but torture during the historical inquisition springs to mind.

  2. I must say that the textures in your first shot are Heavenly, Penelope. And, as always, your insight is illustrated with a fresh idea that jumps off the page and right into my thoughts, where it will happily return every time I pass a playground. A seasaw! Yes, perfect!

  3. Very well said, Maria. I tend to forget Nature can raise hell as much as mankind can. I hate, for instance, to think of my family and friends living on an earthquake fault line, but then Dick says "Oh, there was a tornado not far away yesterday" or something like that.
Right now you have Spring and we have blowing snow. The wind shifts every few seconds, so very few flakes fall straight down. It isn't hell, but it isn't heaven, either.

  4. Kay, you might be surprised (as I was) to discover it snowed in southwestern BC this morning. Yesterday birds were chirping and buds blooming and this morning it looks like it should be Christmas again. Glad to say it is melting fast, though!

  6. I do believe in Heaven and Hell.
I also believe that we can experience what its like by our own actions here on earth. Some is awfully hellish and some can be very heavenly.

  11. Enjoyed your musings about heaven and hell made me smile - and what you say I agree with, except that I separate people's actions from the concepts - I believe in both heaven and hell. I certainly would like to avoid the last!!

  13. Nice posts. I see it like this. Men have been given choice. If you choose for the good you moving towards heaven. If you choose for the bad side inside you you move towards hell. If that makes sense
