Topsy-Turvy Day In Surrey

THIS ADORABLE PAINTING by an unknown artist on a wall at the Surrey Memorial Hospital expressed perfectly the topsy-turvy feelings we all have known when health goes awry for a while.

The drive to the medical facility was a breeze when my husband needed to get some tests done recently. Not so, however, our walk down the narrow and twisted pathway from the parking lot to the hospital doors.

It was a road patched with detours caused by extensive new construction.

With so much upheaval around us we thought it was funny to be told to wipe our feet … even when, (like in the painting), life seemed to have us standing on our heads with our feet in the air.

Although stages of construction could have been made more patient-friendly, there is no doubt that all the redevelopment and expansion is worth the temporary inconvenience. Surrey, the second largest city in BC, desperately needed an upgrade to its shabby health care facilities.

The project will cost well over $500 million and is described in this way by the city, “A new, state-of-the art critical care tower, complete with a new emergency department, perinatal centre, inpatient beds, intensive care unit and academic space to be built at Surrey Memorial Hospital.”

  2. I smiled at that wonderful painting, Penelope, and then laughed out loud at the "please wipe your feet" sign. I do love that your sense of humour and sensitive eye are in excellent order, even as you help your husband face health challenges. As you said, the upgrade to the hospital is not before need. I hope it will be a step along the way to improved resources that will make everyone's life easier when faced with medial dilemmas.

  11. Ah! 500 ml is a lot of money but being spent on upgrading your health care centre I'm sure will mean a big improvement to your community.

  16. Great shots and they reveal such truth! It seems that hospitals are the worst of the lot when remodeling! One would think they would be the safest!

Scary and I am glad you retained your sense of humor. I also hope your husband is doing better!

  17. Our local NHS hospital spent a lot of money on getting itself a new facade, but hasn't bothered to upgrade the A & E washrooms since it was built! Quite extraordinary.

And I hope the tests have gone well.

  18. The painting made me smile. A person is doing a handstand (or headstand) in high grass? I like the way you associated the painting with “Wipe your feet”.

I hope no problem with the medical examination result of your husband and I’ll keep my fingers crossed for that.

  19. Our local hospital was renovated just a while back so I know how inconvenient it can be. But it will all be worth it!

  20. I do hope everything about your husband was all right.
    The picture is very intriguing.
The boy may be joking and enjoying people's reaction.
This picture must have many interpretations depending on the state of the mind of each person.
    Have a great week!

  22. There is no time like the present to thank all that have sent their good wishes to my husband as we try to resolve the ongoing mystery of his health problems. One test leads to another and right now there are more questions than answers. But I do believe each kind thought makes a difference in a positive way. :)
