Granville Island Treats

WHAT A TREAT to recently meet up with my photogenic friend, Carol, from birdsbikesnbeasts with her buddy Black Jack at Granville Island. It was great to see her face-to-face as we most often communicate digitally. The weather was warm and the setting was sublime.

The usual suspects watched us enjoy a chat and a snack. Ready-to-swoop seagulls hoping for handouts and sharp-eyed pigeons and sparrows were poised to scoop up crumbs from messy eaters.

Not looking for handouts but rather a bit of applause and some coinage were talented buskers who entertain regularly at the outdoor plaza. Serkan Sogukpinar (pictured above) was truly a treat to hear.

Serkan played old favorites with fresh flair. His fingers slid comfortably over the strings of his unique electric guitar. You can listen to its sound and see more of Granville Island HERE. Playing at various Vancouver seaside venues, Serkan's rendition of the familiar toe-tapping, hand-clapping Hungarian Dance No.5 can be heard HERE.

Good company and good music in a peaceful setting ... can there be anything sweeter? I like what scholar William Lyon Phelps had to say: "Those who decide to use leisure as a means of mental development, who love good music, good books, good pictures, good plays, good company, good conversation - what are they? They are the happiest people in the world."

  5. How fun to meet a blog friend for real! I remember her posts from a while ago, but lost track somehow. Beautiful words about the value of leisure time....not wasted time!

  8. What a treat indeed! I love all your photos! As far as seagulls go, here in Quebec (Montreal) we call them "McDonald's birds", because you can often see them hanging out on the top of public lamp posts around McDonald's Restaurants. LOL! I think they like the fries! Thank you so much for sharing and I hope you have a superb weekend! :)

  9. What beautiful words, Maria! I enjoyed our conversation so much, and only regret that we don't manage to get together more often. I loved the quote you included by William Lyon Phelps and wondered if I could express my appreciation for your friendship with a quote as well. I came across this one by Robert Southey: “No distance of place or lapse of time can lessen the friendship of those who are thoroughly persuaded of each other's worth.” Each time we've met, I've returned home feeling fortunate to know you and even more fortunate to count you as a good friend! As for my disappearance from the blogging world, I feel inspired by your post, and by the kind comments of some of my favourite bloggers, to return. I don't know if my good intentions will translate to action, but for sure, I have enjoyed the reminder that every single post you write contains gems of wisdom, beautiful photography and a connection to your appreciative readers that has been sadly missed.

  12. What a lovely visit to Granville Island for you and Carol, and Black Jack, too, of course. I'm sure he wasn't as interested in dropped food as the birds were, especially the gulls, ubiquitous as they are in BC.
Sigh. Your posts always make me feel homesick. I don't know when I'll be out again. Time will tell.
Meanwhile, Lindy is snoring from...would you believe?...the middle of the kitchen. This old blind dog knows where everything is, so she lies in front of the refrigerator, but we won't allow her to lie in front of the stove.
Hugs to B and H, and yourownself, from here — K
