Flights & Fantasy In My World

DREAMS ABOUT FLYING are common and have happened to almost everyone I know at least once. I wondered recently if my sleepy imaginings are inspired by watching birds regularly, in action, during my visits to Crescent Beach.

It is both a joy and a challenge to photograph seagulls as they flit about with such ease and perfection. It looks so freeing when they take to the air.

I can feel elevated off the ground from excitement. But you need wings to truly soar when awake ... unless (as some believe) the human body can levitate through mysterious mystic channels.

In my dreams there is no need to flap my arms. I need no balloons, strings or umbrellas. I simply rise up as lightly as if I were a feather. I do this without any qualms because it is natural and I am as confident as a gull in the sky.

Perhaps there is the physical reason, such as light headedness, that causes these dreams to occur. To astrologers the experience represents positive or negative feelings depending on how high and where the dreamer flies.

Not always keen about heights in reality, I am content to hover far above the crowd when I slumber but descend the second I doubt I can fly.

Part of me wants to believe a trampoline (summer photo) is not the only predictable way to get a bounce up and that John Lennon was as wise as he was whimsical when he said, "I believe in everything until it is disproved. So I believe in fairies, the myths, dragons. It all exists even if in your mind. Who’s to say that dreams and nightmares aren’t as real as the here and now?"

  1. Perfectly lovely shots! Without fantasy, this world is uninteresting. Though invisible, you have wings to soar up and fly, which made these fascinating photos possible. I agree with John Lennon.

  6. This post was especially wonderful for me because I believed that I could fly well into my childhood. My theory was that a wicked witch had changed me into a human being and one day I would be changed back and fly away. I had great parents and siblings so it wasn't escaping my home as much as the freedom of flying.
