Raining Umbrellas In My World

RAINING CATS AND DOGS is a familiar way of expressing a heavy downpour. One artist took that saying literally and put it on an umbrella. The ceiling at my local nursery Art Knapp PIantland was decorated with umbrellas when I went there recently. There was something for each personality type. If you can see yourself walking in the rain with the umbrella (pictured above), you probably get a lot of comfort from your pets and have a great sense of humor.

This one seems perfectly suited for nature lovers who take time to smell the flowers but prefer not to stay in one place for too long.

This slick umbrella would appeal to the cool and sophisticated types or those who are a little reserved and do not like a lot of flash.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, a risktaker with a distinct playful side and a passion for Picasso might like this bold design.

Perhaps a mystic wanderer with creative tendencies would enjoy splashing through the drops with this dragonfly pattern.

Hopeless romantics easily ruffled might be drawn to this lovely umbrella.

Adventurers who like to walk on the wildside might leap at the chance to take this colorful umbrella with a lush jungle scene on their travels.

Although I love pets, gardens and nature (and am by no means a city slicker), I am torn between the soft silver New York city scene and the vivid dragonfly patterns. Which umbrella would you pick from the selection above?

  2. What a wonderful collection of umbrellas. I think my favorites are the cats and dogs one and the dragonflies. I like that you matched the umbrellas with personalities and lifestyles.

  10. Love the Tiffany lampshade umbrella. We have a few odd-ball umbrellas too, strawberries, cats and tropical birds.

  11. I would find it hard to choose just one - but maybe the cats and dogs one is the one I like the best. :)

  12. How clever of you to capture this wonderful collection, especially as umbrellas continue to be a necessary item in our summer days!

I am the odd duck who loves rain and is as happy as Penelope to paddle through puddles at any time of year...:)

  13. Surprise, surprise, Penelope, I am drawn to the same two umbrellas that you chose. Now to figure out why. Perhaps, I do have a touch of the mystic wanderer (well, the wanderer, at least) in me, and perhaps, the subtle city one would be for the occasional times when I need to appear to be a bit more sophisticated (or at least, stable :) Or, maybe I am responding to the fact that it does indeed look cool. What a neat post! I really enjoyed the insight into your choices and the reflection that each umbrella inspired.

  15. This is an enjoyable post and it’s very you, penelope. I like the dragonfly pattern best and nature lovers one the second. I’m tired of raining cats and dogs but the umbrella is lovely.

  16. Penelope,
All umbrellas are so fascinating! If I had one of them, I would wait for a rainy day. The umbrellas will change a melancholy rainy day to a wonderland. The umbrellas will not only comfort me but also please the eye of other people in a rainy day. I realize now, one favorite umbrella will change my day!
What a wonderful blog it is! Thanks a lot for sharing this.

  17. These are beautiful, Penelope. If I didn't always lose umbrellas, I'd buy nice ones like this. As it is, I seem to only have umbrellas that people have accidentally left behind in my house, and then I accidentally leave them behind somewhere else.... :)

Have you disabled comments on the blog? I tried to post about the windy day post (more brollies) and couldn't find the link to comment.

  18. Hi Jenny, Misplacing umbrellas happens often in BC, too, where rain is off and on again like a water tap. It is easy to forget you brought an umbrella when you go back outside and the sun is shining. I can only hope the special ones find their way back. Thanks for asking about the comment option: sometimes I shut it off by mistake and sometimes I shut it off when I post just pictures with no commentary of my own. :)
