Future Up In The Air

MY WORLD is also your world that we share and will officially celebrate on April 22nd. This yearly homage to the natural environment started in 1970 and has had a growing impact on our attitudes towards the globe. Earth Day is a sign we are learning more about the green jewel we call home and our vulnerabilities in it.

We are awakening to recycling and preservation needs and paying more attention to the dangers of pollutants and global warming. As we strive to take charge of the issues, some matters are under our control while others are not.

Not only must we contend with the natural evolution of earth, we must also deal with manmade disasters. One of our biggest battles on the can-do list is to end war and its use of weaponry. Pummeling our gorgeous globe with explosives and bombs disrupts the ground that sustains us and sends destructive vibrations throughout the planet to perhaps hasten potential earthquakes.

The picture I took when visiting a hilltop village called Montmartre overlooking Paris last year reminds me that the globe is a perfectly balanced orb spinning in space amid meteorites, stars, suns and worlds. Its course could change at any moment like the ball the boy is whirling. Although Earth will likely continue its galactic path, how long humanity remains onboard is up in the air. Our voyage could be extended significantly if we stop pounding the foundations of the vessel that has swept us up on its miraculous journey.

Explorers can find more sites from around the globe at My World.

  1. You're so right.
I can't look at that photo for long, though, because it makes me nervous.
Just sent you a quick e-mail.

  3. I love the photograph you used to illustrate this great post. I remember when Earth Day first started. I hate how little we seem to learn in spite of our theoretical knowledge. The political will to protect our planet in my country seems woefully backward.

  4. Marvelous, thoughtful post and something we all need to become more and more aware of as our world does seem to have a rather scary future if things continue as they have! The photo is perfect! Thank you for sharing your message! Enjoy your week!

  6. Every thing that can be done makes a difference even if it's a small gesture. I'm with you on this one and am doing my part in reducing, reusing and recycling!

    Happy Earth Day!

  7. There is so much to think about on Earth Day. But probably the most destructive thing we're doing is overpopulating the plant, and we've only got finite resources. Just look at herds of deer to see what happens when a species lives beyond its resources.

  8. I totally agree with you.

As to nuclear crisis in Japan, I'm not optimistic nor pessimistic but realistic. I think I can manage following accurate information (not sensationalism), though I know our life wouldn't be so care-free as we would be for drinking tap water at any time or consuming of vegetables, fish, or dairy foods. Safe so far, but don't know how it will be.

It's a terrible degradation of our mother earth with the contamination of the sea, which is so regrettable. As a clean energy to stop global warming, some governmenst changed the direction to nuclear power. What will be this aftermath?

There are many challenges we face but there are things we can do to deal with them on our daily basis.

  11. Yes, our future is so much up in the air, isn't it? And too few are listening. Here in Canada we live in one of the wealthiest countries in the world and - if you ask our politicians - we apparently worry more about the economy than the environment. Hmmm.

  12. i really do agree. I do hope more people will cooperate more in trying to recycle to sustain our Earth's life. By the way, that boy is really good with that spinning ball.

  13. I remember reading your Paris post and especially loving the photo of the young man with the soccer ball. How brilliant to bring that balancing act into our thoughts as you express your appreciation for our world. I don't know if you watched the David Suzuki "Force of Nature" show. One clip in it shows just how precarious the balance is, although he also shows that there is still hope and time for us to turn back the tide of destruction. He spoke at a school years ago when I was teaching in Montreal, and since that day, I have not only admired him, but have done the small things that I can to take care of our world. Each reader of your blog will remember that striking image, and also the especially poignant words of your last sentence. More waves of hope spreading throughout the world, and the knowledge that we are not alone in our concern and love for this earth.

  15. A wonderful piece for Earth Day...heartfelt and full of wisdom. There is still so much we need to address, but I'm heartened that so many like-minded people are raising awareness and doing their part to heal our ailing planet.

I simply loved the photo and the analogy...a perfect illustration of your words!
